Green Living Tips For Senior Citizens

green-living-tips-for-senior-citizensLately, I have been asked if I can write some green living tips for senior citizens. This idea offers much excitement because I have lots of green living tips that seniors can certainly make a difference with in their twilight years. Aside from acting to save the environment, most seniors understand “going green” as any act which brings a healthy and safe life for them, yet always with due consideration on the financial or physical constraints necessarily brought about by age. Below are the green living tips for senior citizens which seem simple but will both save you (if a senior) from spending more and at the same time make you a legitimate contributor to the green cause.

In my last post, I urged all about saving some–any drops of water and had provided quite a number of water saving tips. If you think this is not applicable to you seniors, you are absolutely wrong. It is generally agreed that most seniors easily get cold, and this is vouched by the fact that most American homes spend a large percentage of income on their home energy bill. Of this percentage, about fifteen percent goes to water heaters that we have in the home. For most of us in general, we have made it a habit to turn the shower on for a few minutes just to make sure that the water is warm enough. Much water can be saved if we reduce the time in the shower, and in addition, it would save even more water if we lower the water heater’s temperature a few degrees. And, thinking about purchasing a water heater blanket is also a smart idea not only for seniors, but for all of us.

More energy is lost when you stay with the old version of lighting: incandescent bulbs. You may say you have been using them for decades and are getting accustomed to the glow that they bring, but sometimes what we have been accustomed to may be a little bit unfriendly to the environment. You should now consider using compact fluorescent bulbs because a number of studies already showed that about sixty dollars or more annually are saved by those who have made the switch. Additionally, it is best to use dimmers, motion sensors and timers at your own home to ensure that less energy is wasted. Certainly this is going to save!

At any age, individuals may start to become one of Oprah’s growing number of fans. They may even be following her not only on her TV appearances, but also in Twitter. They can easily find themselves forgetful, and with this, may many times leave the TV and computer turned on for a long period of time. While it is not bad to be obsessful of Oprah or any popular celebrity or series, it is advised that you will make it a habit to turn your appliances off after using them. Turning them off for a longer period of time will certainly help you lengthen the functionality of these appliances and will also help in cutting energy cost. Moreover, one of the hottest green living tips for senior citizens today is observing the so-called “Earth Hour” where all lights and appliances are put off for an hour to sympathize to the global cause of saving Mother Earth.

Furthermore, it is high time that you now know about the term “Green Seal”. In buying goods from the supermarket near you, it is best to look for this third party certification that the item that you will be buying has low toxicity. Products which have these types of seals do not contain chemicals which have been known to be harmful to the environment. This will also help you improve your indoor air quality as there will be less emission.. Another important tip in the essential line of green living tips for senior citizens is making sure that you let fresh air get inside your home so that harmful toxins may be replaced. This is advisable after you make carpet replacements, painting and cleaning your whole house or any part thereof.

Your grandson or granddaughter may also be a fan of air fresheners or some plug-in products which place sweet fragrance to the household air. For a senior, however, these stuffs may just cause you more harm than good and certainly, will deprive you of the chance to breathe the natural, healthy freshness of the air. It may be best if you make the house smell better instead by using plants or by boiling natural herbs. If you are a senior who is into gardening, this will really improve the surrounding atmosphere which will in turn helps to enhance the freshness of the air inside the house.

Finally, maintaining a good hygiene is by far, one of the most effective green living tips for senior citizens that I can stress. You must make sure that you keep the dirt away from the home and your body all of the time. Make sure that pollutants do not get to your body and to your own home. Be sure to place a doormat right on the front doorstep so that you will spend less energy in vacuuming, mopping or sweeping the floor. Following these simple yet hygienic actions can certainly save you water and energy at home and buy you health. Never hesitate to visit here if ever you seem to forget some of the green living tips for senior citizens which I hope will improve your life.
